Ireland, 1892:
Young Irishman Joseph Donnelly, a poor tenant farmer, sets out to avenge his father's death after their family home is burned down by British landlords due to unpaid rent. When Joseph confronts the landlord, he ends up wounded and in the home of the landlord's daughter, Shannon Christie, a wealthy and rebellious young woman who dreams of escaping her upper-class life.

Shannon convinces Joseph to run away with her to America, promising land and opportunity. They flee to Boston, Massachusetts, where they arrive with nothing. Instead of finding land and riches, they face poverty and discrimination.

To survive, Joseph becomes a bare-knuckle boxer, while Shannon works as a servant. Their relationship slowly evolves from reluctant partnership to genuine affection, though they struggle with pride, class differences, and outside pressures.

Eventually, Shannon is wounded, and Joseph saves her by returning her to her family. Believing Shannon is lost to him, Joseph disappears — until months later, during the Oklahoma Land Rush of 1893.
