Origins of the Project
The idea for Snow emerged in 2022, spearheaded by actor Kit Harington, who portrayed Jon Snow for all eight seasons of Game of Thrones. Harington collaborated directly with George R.R. Martin and a team of writers to develop a character-driven continuation set after the original series finale.
The goal? To explore Jon's emotional and psychological aftermath:
"If you come back to him in the story, you need to answer all those questions. What happened after the Wall? What did it mean to kill Daenerys? What life does he have now?" – Kit Harington, via Vanity Fair
Current Status: Shelved
In April 2024, Harington officially confirmed that the Snow series is no longer moving forward.
“We couldn’t find the right story… so at the moment, it’s off the table.” – Kit Harington
HBO has since shifted its focus to other Game of Thrones spin-offs, particularly:
-
House of the Dragon (ongoing)
-
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight (expected in 2026)
What Might Have Been
Although no scripts were made public, reports suggested that Snow would follow Jon’s life beyond the Wall after he killed Daenerys. Themes of trauma, identity, and isolation were expected to define the series, alongside a possible return of characters like Tormund, Arya, or even Ghost.
The sequel had the potential to explore Jon’s grappling with his true name—Aegon Targaryen—and the legacy he never wanted.
Is There Still Hope?
HBO has not entirely ruled out the project. In a 2024 interview, HBO head Casey Bloys said:
“We never say never... it just wasn’t the right time.”
That leaves the door open for a possible revival down the line, especially if demand remains strong.
Jon Snow’s journey may have ended on screen for now—but beyond the Wall, the story still lingers in the cold.
