Plot Summary:
Lawless is set in Franklin County, Virginia, during the Prohibition era in the early 1930s. The story centers around the Bondurant brothers — Forrest, Howard, and Jack — who run a successful moonshine business, illegally distilling and distributing alcohol in the mountains.
Forrest Bondurant, the eldest, is a stoic and fearless leader, while Howard is a war-hardened brute, and Jack, the youngest, is ambitious but inexperienced. Their operation begins to draw attention from corrupt law enforcement and gangsters who want a cut of the profits.
Their biggest threat comes in the form of Special Deputy Charlie Rakes, a sadistic and ruthless lawman from Chicago who is sent to crack down on bootleggers. However, rather than uphold the law, Rakes uses violence and intimidation to seize control over the moonshine trade.
Jack, eager to prove himself, starts dealing with Floyd Banner, a notorious gangster played by Gary Oldman, and expands the family’s business. But as Jack’s confidence grows, so does the danger around him. The Bondurants are soon dragged into a violent conflict with Rakes and other powerful enemies.
Amidst the crime and brutality, there are subplots of romance and personal growth. Jack falls in love with Bertha Minnix, a preacher’s daughter, while Forrest slowly opens his heart to Maggie Beauford, a former dancer from Chicago who seeks safety in the country.
Themes:
-
Family loyalty: The bond between the brothers is central to the story.
-
Violence and survival: In a lawless time, brutality often replaces justice.
-
Corruption vs. independence: The film contrasts government corruption with the outlaws’ own moral code.
-
Rural America: It explores the economic struggles and resilience of the rural working class during Prohibition.
Reception:
Lawless received generally positive reviews from critics. It was praised for:
-
Strong performances (especially Tom Hardy and Guy Pearce)
-
Gritty atmosphere and period-accurate setting
-
Nick Cave’s screenplay and evocative musical score
However, some critics felt the pacing lagged at times and that the violence was occasionally excessive.
Fun Fact:
The film is based on real people — the Bondurant brothers actually existed, and the story was inspired by family legend, as told by author Matt Bondurant, the grandson of Jack Bondurant.
