The Flood 2023

Plot Summary

Set in a remote Louisiana detention center during a Category 5 storm, the story follows a group of inmates and law enforcement officers who must work together when floodwaters breach the facility. As the prison drowns, bloodthirsty alligators are swept in—turning the locked-down fortress into a hunting ground.

The unlikely alliance between convicts and guards creates constant tension, made worse by the predators stalking them in every corridor and submerged hallway.

Main Cast

  • Nicky Whelan as Sheriff Jo Newman, a determined and resourceful officer trying to survive both the convicts and the alligators.

  • Casper Van Dien as Cody, a hardened inmate with hidden depth, forced to lead others to safety.

  • Louis Mandylor and Devanny Pinn round out a cast of prison staff and prisoners caught in the middle of the storm.

Style & Direction

The Flood blends practical sets with digital effects to depict its high-water horror. The aesthetic is gritty and dark, with emergency lighting and underwater shots creating an atmosphere of urgency and claustrophobia. The pacing keeps the tension high, especially in the film’s middle act where escape seems impossible.

The alligator CGI ranges from effective to underwhelming depending on the scene, but the film’s low-budget charm might appeal to fans of retro creature flicks.

Themes & Tone

  • Survival under extreme conditions

  • Redemption through shared struggle

  • Man vs. nature and the failure of human control in the face of natural disaster

The film doesn’t aim for psychological depth—it delivers straightforward thrills and body-count action with little pretense.

Reception

Critics and audiences had mixed reactions:

  • Strengths: fast pacing, simple setup, popcorn-worthy thrills, and a few creative kill scenes.

  • Weaknesses: predictable plot, uneven performances, and underdeveloped characters.

It’s a film best enjoyed by fans of B-grade action-horror, especially those who appreciate movies like Crawl, Deep Blue Sea, or Anaconda.

Verdict

The Flood is exactly what it promises: a compact, gator-infested survival thriller. While it won’t win awards for writing or effects, it makes for an entertaining watch for fans of the genre—especially when viewed with friends, snacks, and a tolerance for the wonderfully ridiculous.
