A Sequel That Never Took Off
Originally, “Justice League 2” was envisioned as the direct continuation of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, part of Snyder’s ambitious five-film arc beginning with Man of Steel and culminating in a grand finale featuring battles against Darkseid and the Anti-Life Equation. At one point, the sequel even had a hypothetical release date—June 14, 2019—but that never materialized.
Studio Pushback
After altering the tone and direction of Justice League following Snyder’s departure, Warner Bros. ultimately decided not to move forward with a sequel to Snyder’s darker vision. Although Snyder retained his conceptual outline, the studio’s priorities changed with the evolving DC Universe leadership—there was no appetite from Warner Bros. for Snyder-led sequels.
Producer Charles Roven at one point suggested that a sequel could be possible in the distant future—but it would likely take many years. As of mid-2022, DC Studios under James Gunn and Peter Safran confirmed there were no plans to continue the Snyderverse or develop sequels to Zack Snyder's Justice League.
What Could the Story Have Been?
Despite the project's cancellation, Snyder has publicly shared much of his intended narrative for the sequel. The plot involved Darkseid brainwashing Superman via the Anti-Life Equation by killing Lois Lane to break his will. The rest of the Justice League would then fight back—trying to recover another Mother Box so Flash could travel back in time to prevent Lois’s death. In the climax, Batman would sacrifice himself to save her and restore Superman’s sense of justice, paving the way for an ultimate showdown in Justice League 3—a massive war between allied armies and Darkseid’s forces.
The Snyder Cut Legacy
While Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021) represented a monumental creative victory—restoring Snyder’s vision for the original film—it was ultimately framed as a standalone achievement. Warner Bros. has emphasized that no further installments are planned, and Snyder himself has stated that he currently has no intention to return, although he didn’t entirely rule it out if circumstances changed.
