🧩 Plot Summary
Jason Tripitikas, a teenage kung fu movie fan from Boston, is obsessed with martial arts films and frequently visits a Chinatown pawnshop to buy bootleg DVDs. One day, he discovers a mysterious golden staff that seems out of place. When he is attacked by local bullies and knocked unconscious, he wakes up in ancient China.
Jason learns that the staff he holds belongs to the Monkey King, a powerful and mischievous warrior who was turned to stone by the evil Jade Warlord. Jason’s arrival fulfills an ancient prophecy — he is the “Seeker” who must return the staff to its rightful owner and free the Monkey King.
Along the way, Jason teams up with three warriors:
-
Lu Yan, a drunken kung fu master
-
Golden Sparrow, a silent assassin seeking revenge
-
The Silent Monk, a stoic monk with hidden power
Together, they journey across China, battling soldiers, facing assassins like the deadly Witch Ni-Chang, and confronting the Jade Warlord in a climactic battle.
Jason eventually returns to the present day — a stronger, wiser fighter — and confronts his bullies with confidence, completing his hero’s journey.

It’s a gateway film for Western audiences into Chinese fantasy lore, inspired by classics like Journey to the West.
