Storyline

The series is set in the near future, around the year 2039, after a devastating global pandemic wipes out most of humanity. The only surviving community in Germany lives on the remote island of Helgoland, in the North Sea.

Life on the island is strictly controlled by one brutal rule: the population must never exceed 513 people. Whenever a new person is born or arrives, the person ranked lowest in the island’s “value system” is executed to maintain balance. This ranking is based on each individual’s usefulness, skills, and behavior, creating a cruel hierarchy where survival depends on constant judgment.

As tensions rise within the island community, new threats also appear from the mainland. A rebel force begins preparing to invade Helgoland, hoping to seize the last safe refuge left on Earth. The people of Helgoland are forced to choose between strict order and humanity, survival and morality, obedience and resistance.

Main Characters

  • Beatrice Westphal (Martina Gedeck): The iron-willed leader of Helgoland, who enforces the ruthless system in order to preserve order.

  • Marek Storbeck (Alexander Fehling): A compassionate doctor, torn between saving lives through medical research and upholding the island’s deadly rules.

  • Daniela (Antje Traue): A woman caught between loyalty and rebellion.

  • Fiona (Tijan Marei): A young woman who questions the morality of the ranking system.

  • Supporting cast includes Kathrin Angerer, Samuel Finzi, and Maja Schöne, among others.

Production

  • Filming took place between 2022 and 2023 across locations such as Hamburg, Berlin, Sylt, and Amrum, capturing the harsh and isolated atmosphere of the North Sea.

  • The show was produced under environmentally friendly “Green Motion” standards.

  • It won the Public Prize at the Golden Nymph Awards in 2024.

Themes

  • Survival vs. Morality: How far should people go to survive when life is reduced to numbers and rankings?

  • Power and Fear: The system exposes how fear can maintain control more effectively than freedom.

  • Human Value: The dystopian society questions what makes a human life “worthy.”

  • Resistance and Hope: Characters begin to rebel, searching for ways to change the brutal order.

Reception

  • Audience Response: Mixed to positive. Many praised the originality of the concept, strong performances (especially Martina Gedeck and Alexander Fehling), and the bleak, immersive atmosphere.

  • Strengths: Thought-provoking social commentary, psychological depth, and high production values.

  • Weaknesses: Some viewers found the pacing slow and the story occasionally predictable.

  • IMDb Score: Around 5.7/10, reflecting divided opinions but steady interest in its dystopian themes.
