Plot Summary
Set 40 years after the original adventure, The Goonies 2 finds the town of Astoria once again on the brink of change — this time threatened by a tech giant planning to demolish the coastline for luxury resorts.
Finn Wolfhard plays Ben Walsh, the curious and clever son of Mikey (Sean Astin, reprising his role), who discovers an old journal hidden in the attic — a continuation of One-Eyed Willy’s legend. Alongside his sister Lena (Sadie Stanley), and a new crew of Goonie descendants, Ben sets off on a puzzle-filled journey beneath the Oregon wilderness — filled with booby traps, forgotten catacombs, and a long-lost pirate fleet.
But the stakes are higher now. The treasure is bigger, the riddles are harder, and they’re not the only ones chasing the prize.
Legacy Cast & New Faces
Returning cast members include Sean Astin (Mikey), Ke Huy Quan (Data), and Corey Feldman (Mouth), each offering guidance — and comic relief — as mentors to the new Goonies. Their presence strikes the perfect balance between homage and handoff.
Newcomers Finn Wolfhard and Sadie Stanley shine in leading roles, blending charm, wit, and the scrappy courage that made the original so beloved.
Direction, Style & Themes
Donner Jr. stays true to the tone of the original: thrilling but family-friendly, mysterious but full of heart. Classic practical effects mix with light modern CGI, giving the film an authentic ‘80s adventure vibe with a modern polish.
At its core, The Goonies 2 is about friendship, legacy, and the timeless need to believe in something bigger than yourself. The film celebrates curiosity and courage — with just enough danger to keep audiences on the edge of their seats.
Final Verdict
The Goonies 2 is the rare sequel that feels earned. It respects the past without getting stuck in it, and gives a whole new generation of dreamers their own reason to say, “Goonies never say die.”
